ETA – All You Need to Know

Global travel is increasingly regulated with governments around the world implementing various measures to enhance border security – and the British government is no different. Here in the UK we have recently introduced the ETA system for all visitors coming in to the country – but luckily, the aim is to make for a smoother arrival process.

The ETA System

“What is the ETA?” I hear you say. ETA stands for Electronic Travel Authorisation and is similar to the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) which is currently in place in the US and is much like other border systems already in place in Europe. It is basically a system designed to check that people traveling to the UK meet certain entry requirements with the aim of enhancing security and streamlining the border entry process. So hopefully you’ll experience a slicker process of getting through the airport upon your arrival, all the better for getting on for with your holiday!

ETA vs VISA – What’s the difference?

The ETA is not the same as a VISA – a Visa is required for people coming to the UK to reside here for an extended period, generally for the purposes of work or study. People travelling for leisure reasons do not normally need a visa but they will need an ETA – the ETA is designed specifically for short-term visits and those travelling for leisure, tourism or business purposes. If you’re coming here for a vacation in England, Scotland or Wales, you will need an ETA.

I’m Visiting Britain in 2025 – do I need an ETA?

Yes, is the simple answer. If you’re travelling to the UK from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa, you will need to obtain an ETA. The system is in place and mandatory for travellers from these countries commencing in January 2025. The ETA is needed wherever you arrive in the UK whether it be in to England, Scotland or Wales and whether you arrive by sea or sky. Most of our clients arrive in to Heathrow or Gatwick airports in London, England or into Edinburgh or Glasgow in Scotland – either way local staff will be checking that you have an ETA.

How do I get an ETA for a Britain Vacation?

Fortunately, it’s a super-easy process. Travelers can apply online through an official government website or via a dedicated app which can be downloaded onto your phone or device. It’s a straight-forward process and should take no longer than 15 -20 minutes to complete. Bear in mind that you’ll need your passport information and be in a position to answer some questions regarding your personal status but you won’t need details of your trip – the ETA is not tied to a specific trip or vacation.

Does the ETA Cost Anything?

Yes, there is a cost attached, but not much! The ETA will cost just £10 per person for the application after its launch in Jan 2025. This nominal amount is just used to cover the costs of administering the system and is equivalent to around USD$12.50. Once obtained, the ETA remains valid for a period of two years in which time, you can travel to the UK as many times as you like – so when you fall in love with Britain, you can book your next trip right away!

When should I apply for my ETA for my Britain Vacation?

As soon as possible!  You should apply for the ETA in advance of your trip – approval can take up to three business days so make sure you allow time for this to happen prior to your trip. As mentioned, once obtained your ETA will be valid for a period of two years and will cover any and all trips taken to Britain in this period, so the maximum time frame would be two years before your trip.

What does the ETA look like?

The ETA is effectively invisible – it’s simply attached digitally to your passport number – ie. when border officials scan your passport or check your passport details upon arrival, they’ll be able to see if you have a valid ETA. For your own assurance, you may want to take a printed copy of your online ETA confirmation but generally, you won’t be asked to present this.

What happens if I don’t get an ETA?

In our conversations with home office and border force officials, we’ve been told that in the early days of the introduction, border staff will show leniency with those who have not obtained their ETA in advance – local staff will complete the usual checks to ensure you are eligible for travel but this might take some time and delay your entry. It is understood that staff will become more strict over time – the ETA is technically mandatory and, ultimately, you could be denied entry to the UK if you don’t meet the criteria.
