Chelsea Flower Show Rescheduled to September
May is a beautiful month; with warmer and longer days it is a great time for outdoor activities. To celebrate the beginnings of the summer, many concerts, festivals and shows are organised all over the country. As things return to normal here in Britain, we must be patient and accept that this year’s events are going to look a little bit different than what we’re normally used to. However, although changes in dates, limited tickets and greater hygiene measures are to be expected these days, we’ll still be able to attend some of our favourite events in 2021 and enjoy time outside. One such event will be the exceptionally colourful and fragrant Chelsea Flower Show!
For those who have never heard of Chelsea Flower Show, I won’t surprise you with its purpose as it is indeed a flower themed event, though you’ll be surprised how pretty and extraordinary the show actually is! With a fabulous showcase of gardens, unique range of flowers, plants and trees, and plethora of other pursuits including arts & crafts, exhibitions, shopping or live music, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show is renowned worldwide as one of the most prestigious horticultural event and one of London’s greatest annual shows.
Its journey began thanks to Royal Horticultural Society (RHS); an organisation joining people who shared the same appreciation and love for flora. On their initiative, The Great Spring Show was first organised in Kensington, London in 1862 and continued annually for 26 years, until being moved to Temple Gardens. It was in year 1913 however when more indefinite changes occurred and the show’s location has been moved to the affluent borough of Chelsea and the grounds of its Royal Hospital. Following, the name of the show has been changed and since then the tradition of Chelsea Flower Show being held there in May has been maintained for over 100 years.
Many incredible gardens were shown during this time raising the bar for competitors higher and higher each year. Revolutionary exhibits and trends, different techniques, exotic plants and infinite imaginations were and still are shocking the public. Innovation, creativity, passion, knowledge and of course pure beauty were bursting out of corners and tents, turning them into magnificent little yet complete worlds.
Looking perfect, it requires a ton of preparation. Last year, organisers of the show decided to conduct a virtual event for 2020 instead of cancelling it. Televised by BBC and available online nation’s favourite horticultural occasion pleased the eyes of Brits for nearly a week in May. This year however, Chelsea Flower Show has been postponed to September first time since 1913! Breaking this tradition was necessary to host a physical event in near to normal conditions – after all, there is no better way than being there to experience the beauty yourself in person!
If you’d like to attend the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2021, you can still contact our agents for a special Wales and England coach tour in September 2021, however if you’d prefer to wait until the next year and attend the show traditionally in May, please see the English gardens small group tour for 2022. We will be happy to provide with inspirational experience during this unique tour by exploring the charming county of Kent, its most iconic houses and gardens, and of course the main event of Chelsea Flower Show itself.
