Steffi Watts – Britain Travel Consultant

One of the newest members of the adeo Travel team, Steffi grew up in wide-open landscapes of the Norfolk in the east of England and spent most of her early years soaking up the wonders of the British countryside. Always keen to explore the wider world, in 2010 Steffi decided to up-roots and move across the country to the Welsh capital of Cardiff to study at university and has made South Wales her home ever since!

Before joining the team, Steffi worked extensively as a professional stage manager and has been lucky enough to travel the length of the UK, supporting theatre performances and cultural events of all scales and exploring some of Britain’s most vibrant towns & cities along the way. She has in-depth knowledge of the theatre & performing arts scene in Britain and her happy place is Edinburgh, where she has spent several summers supporting shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

A self-confessed foodie, outside of work Steffi can often be found exploring some of Britain’s best loved markets, shopping for home-grown produce and sampling all of the local delicacies. Her particular favourites include London’s Borough Market and of course Cardiff Market for some of the best Welsh cakes in the city!

Q&A Section

We asked our travel consultants some questions about their time in the travel industry and here’s what Steffi had to say…

What’s your favourite destination in Britain and why?

Oh, it’s very difficult to pick just one but for me it has to be the Scottish capital, Edinburgh! I find this city absolutely magical no matter what time of year I have visited, although long summers spent at the Edinburgh Fringe festival definitely rank highly! There’s nothing quite like the atmosphere of a city taken over with arts, culture and music for an entire month – Every day of the festival feels like a celebration! Equally, the city is also completely magical in the colder months, with its iconic gothic architecture and winding lanes and passageways, you’re always sure to find a cosy corner to curl up and hide from the ever-unpredictable Scottish weather!

What’s your must-see Britain attraction?

If I find myself in London, the selection of museums here are just outstanding and I try to visit at least one every time I find myself in the capital. The V&A museum is possibly my favourite of them all, with its seemingly never-ending collections and exhibitions telling the stories of art, design and performance from across the globe. Aside from the exhibitions themselves, the building is also something to marvel at, boasting a grand entrance hall and courtyard garden where you can grab a cuppa in between galleries – Plus, it has fantastic shop!

What’s the hotel you most like recommending for clients and why?

A trip to Britain wouldn’t be complete without venturing out into the countryside and enjoying a drink in a beautiful country pub. With this in mind, it is always a pleasure to recommend The Lygon Arms in the quaint Cotswolds village of Broadway. Situated in the heart of the village, this gorgeous historic hotel oozes with rustic charm and subtle luxury with its low ceilings, cosy nooks and the on-site spa. Staying at the Lygon feels very much like ‘coming home’, and from the moment you walk through the door, you feel at ease and ready to curl up with a hot drink and a good book after a long walk in the country.

What’s the biggest travel challenge you’ve overcome?

It’s no real secret that us Brits do love to talk about the weather and I would say that the weather has been to blame for several of my travel challenges over the years! Our small country can experience everything from heatwaves to snowstorms and one of the biggest challenges I have experienced was from my touring theatre days when the ‘Beast from the East’ snowstorm left myself and the show crew stranded in Birmingham! With road closures and no train services, we knew that getting home was going to be a challenge, luckily for us however, our hotel was very understanding and we were able to stay a little longer! Although the changeable weather can be quite daunting for our guests travelling to Britain, there is no need to let this put you off visiting – As Britain travel experts, we are well equipped (and experienced!) in overcoming these challenges and we are at the end of the phone to assist should you need us during your trip, ensuring that you have an enjoyable experience – whatever the weather!

What’s your top tip for your clients coming to Britain?

Don’t worry too much about pronouncing the names of our towns and cities wrong! The names of our towns and villages can be a little strange and so many places are pronounced differently to how they are spelled and, just to complicate things, pronunciation may vary depending on where you are in the country! Often, there is a local or historical reason for the way our towns and cities are named so this makes for a great opportunity to start a conversation with the locals during you visit.

What’s the best thing about being part of the adeo Travel Team?

Always having an excellent excuse for exploring a new place! There aren’t many careers where you can count visiting a new city or hotel as ‘research’ and I love every minute!

What’s your next holiday destination?

I’ve been really lucky to have had some amazing big adventures over the last year, including Greece and Canada! So my plans for the summer are likely to be a little more local, possibly with a camping trip to Cornwall or maybe Pembrokeshire in West Wales.
