Jane Austen’s stomping ground was around the South of England and Central England, incorporating the scenic and historic counties Hampshire and Wiltshire. Her Birthplace is the charming village of Steventon whose cobbled and whimsical atmosphere shaped her early works and characters. In recent decades, Jane Austen’s most famous works have been transformed in to fantastic pieces of film and television featuring not only world class actors but also ever-popular and completely timeless destinations across England. The Regency architecture of Bath City, which played such a key role in Austen’s own life, has also played a backdrop to many of the screen adaptations as has the nearby historic village of Lacock. Some of England’s many grandiose country estates have also featured as Pemberly, the Dashwood residence or other iconic settings from the novels – these include Hampton Court Palace in London, the magnificent Chatsworth House in the Peak District, Castle Howard near York and the Stourhead Estate near Bath. Jane Austen 250 – A year of Celebrations
To celebrate the anniversary, there are a number of cultural events and special exhibitions taking place in the UK in destinations related to Austen and her works. From September 12th to 21st, 2025, Bath will host a special festival featuring Regency-themed events, including a grand costumed promenade on September 13th 2025. The festival will also offer additional events throughout the year, with tickets available from Spring 2025. Jane Austen’s House, Chawton in Hampshire, will also be running a series of celebratory exhibitions and events
including their Spring Fling: Sense and Sensibility Festival, taking place from the 1st to the 11th of May 2025. The festival will feature a program of special events, including themed tours, walks, performances, workshops and pop-up talks. The museum will also host further mini festivals dedicated to her specific novels in July and September. Finally, in Winchester, where Austen spent her final years, a life-size statue will be unveiled to honor her memory. Additionally, her final residence at No. 8 College Street in the city will be open to the public for the first time, providing a unique glimpse into her personal life.
