Our guide to Tenby
Tenby is another chocolate box welsh tourist resort with beautiful beaches, colourful houses, shops, cafes and pubs all linked by cobbled streets.
The original name of the town was Dinbych y Pysgod or ‘little town of fishes’. The town’s hilltop position led to its early settlement as a Welsh stronghold, which was replaced in medieval times by a Norman Castle and walled town. Part of the town walls survive today at the entrance to the old town as does parts of the cliff-top castle overlooking the town. During Georgian and Victorian times Tenby became a popular seaside resort and its Victorian promenades contribute to the architectural look of the town.
One of the most popular activities in Tenby is simply to take a stroll along one of the three beautiful, sandy beaches, build a sandcastle and enjoy an ice cream. The little harbour is a charming affair with the bustle fishing boats bringing in the day’s haul to provide to the local seafood restaurants which are aplenty in this little town. You can also visit St Mary’s Church on Upper Frog Street, in the centre of town, which dates back to the 15th century and boasts 500-year-old memorials to former mayors. In the nearby village of Lamphey you can also find Lamphey Bishop’s Palace, well-worth a visit for any history buff.
Another popular attraction in the summer months is Caldey Island. Just 20 minutes away by boat, this holy island owned and run by a community of Cistercian monks is an oasis of calm where you can watch seabirds or relax on the tiny beach. Attractions on the island include the 12th Century Priory, museum, perfume shop and tea gardens.
Pembrokeshire is Britain’s only coastal national path so you can’t miss taking a walk along the Pembrokeshire coast path. One of the most popular routes is a 4.5 stretch North from Tenby to Saundersfoot. You can also learn more about the National Park at the National Park centre and shop which is located near the Five Arches, a fortress-like section of Tenby’s impressive medieval walls.
Relaxing and beautiful, Wales‘ favourite seaside resort town of Tenby is not to be missed.
