The Hotel

Steeped in a unique history, you’ll receive a warm welcome at Lindeth Howe. Dating back to 1879, the hotel was once a summer holiday for a wealthy mill owner, before being sold to a retired Captain in Her Majesty’s Grenadier Guards, Bruce Canon Vernon Wentworth. Between 1902 and 1913 Beatrix Potter stayed there, wrote and illustrated two of her stories, “Timmy Tiptoes” and “Pigling Bland” and later bought the house in 1915 for her mother, who passed away 2 decades later. After selling it to Doxford family in 1933, the hotel has been under different ownerships since and started its journey as a hotel only in 1983. Nowadays, it is a perfect place to be in the Lake District with hotel’s logo being written in Beatrix Potter’s handwriting!
