Christmas in Scotland tour - Edinburgh Castle

St Andrews Castle, Scotland

Linlithgow Palace and St Andrews

This morning you'll step back in time as we visit the magnificent ruin of Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, more recently you may recognise it from the hit show Outlander. Then we'll travel through the charming fishing villages of the East Neuk region overlooking the wild and icy North Sea, before reaching historic St Andrews: the Home of Golf. Most famous for the Old Course where, according to legend, the sport of golf was invented, the town is also worth visiting for its Medieval centre, historic castle and 15th century university which was attended by Prince William and is noted as where he met his future bride Kate Middleton.

accommodationAccommodation: Rusacks Hotel, St Andrews (or similar) - dinner included.

Whisky sampling and the Cairngorm National Park

Today we will begin by driving through the picture-postcard villages of the Tayside region on route to the Royal Lochnagar Distillery near Balmoral. Here we will have the opportunity to see how traditional Scotch Whisky is made and perhaps sample a dram of the award-winning Royal Lochnagar 12-Year-Old Single Highland Malt. Then on through the wintry Highland scenery of central Scotland to tonight's accommodation at Muchrach Country House. This wonderfully restored Victorian lodge in the heart of the unspoilt wilderness of the Cairngorms national park is the perfect place to spend Christmas Eve.

Celebrate Christmas in the Scottish Highlands

Celebrate Christmas in the Scottish Highlands

Christmas in the Highlands

Today you'll enjoy the very special festival that is Christmas Day and experience some Scottish festive traditions. Exchange a gift with your family or friends before your day's highlight; a delicious five-course Christmas Lunch and, of course, a wee dram of something stronger before watching the Queen's speech (a very British tradition!). The rest of the day will be yours to do what you like with – work off your Christmas lunch by taking in the magnificent scenery of the Cairngorms National Park with a leisurely stroll in the hotel grounds. Or just put your feet up and enjoy the hotel's hospitality and fine selection of whiskies!

accommodationAccommodation: Muchrach Country House Hotel, Cairngorms National Park - lunch and dinner included.

Loch Ness, Inverness and the Highlands

After a leisurely Christmas Day, Boxing Day (December 26th) will be a more active affair! We'll travel north to Loch Ness, the largest body of fresh water in Britain and home to the elusive Loch Ness Monster; the legend of Nessie dates all the way back to the 7th Century although the beast has yet to be caught! After enjoying the spectacular surroundings of the Great Glen we'll head to Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands but one of Britain's smallest cities, where we have some free time to explore and see the sights before returning to the hotel for a delicious afternoon tea.

accommodationAccommodation: Muchrach Country House Hotel, Cairngorms National Park - dinner included.

attractionsHighlights: Loch Ness.

Pitlochry, Aberfeldy and Loch tay

A day of heritage in the heart of Scotland; today's first stop is the bustling town of Pitlochry, the gateway to the Highlands. It's setting on the banks of the River Tummel makes this town particularly picturesque. Then it's on to Aberfeldy to see the Black Watch Monument which memorialises the men who watched over Scotland following the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. Finally, we'll visit the magnificent dark waters of Loch Tay and get an insight into life on Loch Tay two and a half thousand years ago at the Crannog Centre where we'll find the only authentic recreation of an Iron Age Loch dwelling in Scotland.

accommodationAccommodation: Loch Lomond Arms Hotel (or similar) - dinner included.

attractionsHighlights: Pitlochry, Aberfeldy and the Black Watch Monument, Loch Tay and the Crannog Centre.

Christmas in Scotland - Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond, Scotland

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park

Today you'll have the day free to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. The word 'Trossachs' refers to a romantic area of sparkling lochs, rolling hills and emerald forests, once the stomping ground of folk hero Rob Roy. Sir Walter Scott based his epic poem, The Lady of the Lake (1810) about a girl who lived here, cementing the area's association with romantic beauty. You could take a cruise across the loch, check out the colony of wallabies which live on one of the loch's 30 islands or just take a gentle stroll along the banks of the largest Loch in Scotland. Then return to the hotel for dinner and a special ale evening with a local expert.

accommodationAccommodation: Loch Lomond Arms Hotel (or similar) - dinner included.

attractionsHighlights: Loch Lomond, Trossachs National Park and Ale evening.

Christmas in Scotland tour - Stirling Castle

Stirling Castle, Scotland

Glasgow and Stirling

Today we'll be visiting two of Scotland's most famous cities: Glasgow and Stirling. In the morning you'll enjoy some free time in Glasgow, where you'll enjoy internationally-acclaimed galleries and museums, stunning architecture and diverse shopping opportunities. Then, after lunch, it's on to Stirling where you'll explore Stirling Castle, which rivals that of Edinburgh for its beauty and historic significance, before visiting the National Wallace Monument; this stunning hill-top tower will offer spectacular views over Stirling and beyond. Later we continue to our historic castle hotel.

accommodationAccommodation: Broomhall Castle (or similar) - dinner included.

Falkirk Wheel

On the final day of our tour we'll visit the nearby Falkirk Wheel which is the world's only rotating boatlift. It opened in 2002 to replace a staircase of eleven locks which took almost an entire day to traverse and incorporates an amazing feat of engineering lifting canal boats hundreds of feet in the air between the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals. Then it's on to Edinburgh where you'll say goodbye to your fellow travellers or join the New Year's festivities on the Hogmanay tour.
