  1. Day 1 Stratford-upon-Avon, The Borders and the Cambrian Mountains

This morning meet your driver-guide at London Victoria and head out in to the English countryside. The road takes north west to William Shakespeare's birthplace and home town, Stratford-upon Avon. Stratford is a gem of central England, a charming medieval market town of black & white Tudor era timber frame buildings and open greens next to the river. Following lunch in Stratford you will travel west through the Welsh Marches - the borderlands between England and Wales marked out by the ancient Offa's Dyke. The route then leads into the heart of the Cambrian Mountains and the beautiful Elan Valley from where pure Welsh water is supplied to the distant City of Birmingham. Leaving here in the late afternoon it is just an hour or so to the beautiful seaside town and cultural centre of Aberystwyth.

    Overnight: Aberystwyth, North West Wales

  2. Day 2 Snowdonia and Harlech Castle

Our day today explores north Wales and the glorious, hills and mountains of the Snowdonia National Park; we head firstly for the beautiful mountain village of Beddgelert, the resting place of a legendary hound, 'Gelert', and the nearby copper mine – no longer working but open to visitors. The coast at the small town of Criccieth is a short ride away where there is a fine example of one of the castles of the Welsh Princes; with great views from the ramparts along the coast and out into Cardigan Bay. Then onwards to Porthmadog, home of the Ffestingog light railway and over the Cob causeway before reaching Harlech Castle - one of Edward I's masterpieces of medieval military architecture and part of a set of similar castles which that ring the north Wales coastline, Harlech perches on a rocky precipice over-looking the Irish Sea.

  3. Day 3 Cardigan Bay, the Black Mountains and Tenby

Leaving Aberystwyth, we travel south passing the sweeping sands of Cardigan Bay, through the pretty little planned town of Aberaeron to New Quay with its a charming harbour containing fishing boats and its connections with Dylan Thomas. From the breakwater wall you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins or whales out in the bay. Turning inland again, we strike out for gold at the Dolaucothi mine which dates back to Roman times before heading into the foreboding Black Mountains. Having perhaps explored the mysterious bedrock cave under a castle with ancient origins we head for the coast again at Laugharne where Dylan Thomas wrote the famous play "Under Milk Wood". From here it's a short distance to Tenby, the small, picturesque seaside town that will be your base for 2 nights.

  4. Day 4 The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and St Davids

Our last full day touring is spent exploring the extreme south-west of the country, in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. This region was the birthplace of both the patron saint of Wales, St David, and the Twdyr (anglicised to Tudor) royal dynasty. After stopping in the county town of Pembroke itself, home to yet another imposing castle we make our way to the tiny cathedral city of St Davids for lunch and time to explore this magical place. By afternoon we follow the coast to Strumble Head, the site of the last invasion of Britain in 1797 (by an American leading coerced Frenchmen!). We then pass through the Presili Hills, a place of entombment in Neolithic times and the mysterious source of the blue stones of Stonehenge before they were mysteriously transported more than 150 miles nearly 4000 years ago. From here we return once more to Tenby.

  5. Day 5 The Museum of Welsh Life and the Welsh Capital, Cardiff

Leaving Tenby in the morning, we return East. Joining the main roads, we pass the big industrial city of Swansea on route to the Welsh Capital of Cardiff, Europe's youngest capital. On the outskirts of the city we pause for a visit to the St Fagans Museum of Welsh Life a sprawling open air collection of real historic buildings and exhibitions which details life in Wales throughout the ages from the first Celtic settlers to the industrial revolution. After this visit your guided tour ends in central Central Cardiff *. After bidding farewell to your tour driver-guide you can check-in to your central Cardiff hotel and spend the next two days exploring independently. This afternoon, perhaps take a stroll to see the Edwardian baroque architecture of Cathays park, home to the national museum and gallery of Wales or to the elegant Victorian market and shopping arcades of the city centre. * Complimentary transfer back to central London with the tour guide is available on this day if you are limited for time please ask for a quotation based on this abbreviated package.
